Establish an Emergency Veterinary Service for Peterhead, Fraserburgh & Surrounding Areas

We, the undersigned, are calling for the urgent establishment of a local emergency veterinary service in the North East of Scotland, covering Peterhead, Fraserburgh, and the surrounding communities.

At present, the nearest emergency vet is located in Aberdeen, approximately 40 minutes from Peterhead and over 50 minutes from Fraserburgh. In many critical situations, this travel time is far too long and can mean the difference between life and death for our pets.

Our request:
We are asking for the creation of an emergency veterinary clinic, or the provision of rotating out-of-hours coverage, in or near the Peterhead/Fraserburgh area. This would provide accessible, timely, and compassionate emergency care for the many animals who need it.
Pets deserve the same chance at life-saving treatment, no matter where they live. Please support this petition so that our communities can finally have the emergency veterinary care they urgently need.

Why is this important?

Pets are beloved members of our families, yet in emergencies, we are left with no local, life-saving options. Some urgent conditions require immediate treatment, and the current distance to emergency care is simply unsafe. Examples include:

  • Poisoning – ingestion of toxic foods, plants, or chemicals can be fatal within an hour.

  • Bloat (Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus) – a life-threatening condition in dogs that requires immediate surgery.

  • Seizures – prolonged or repeated seizures can cause brain damage or death without rapid intervention.

  • Road traffic accidents – traumatic injuries often require urgent stabilisation.

  • Obstructed labour – both mother and offspring can die if treatment is delayed.

  • Blocked urinary tract (especially in male cats) – can lead to organ failure and death within hours.

Families should not have to risk losing their pets simply because they live outside the city. With so many pet owners in our coastal and rural communities, the lack of a local emergency veterinary facility leaves us vulnerable and forces unnecessary suffering.
