Free parking at Eastrop Park

We, the undersigned, with the support of Eastrop and Grove, and Norden ward Councillors and the Women's Equality Party request that the Council reviews the new parking charges at Eastrop Park.

Why is this important?

The introduction of parking charges at Eastrop Park has been implemented during a cost of living crisis. It ignored a significant level (c99%) of public objection; it restricts access to outdoor space and exercise with the associated health benefits following pandemic restrictions; it adversely affects those on a low income (according to the Council's own Equalities Impact Assessment) predominantly women who are far more likely to be poor, have care of children, and not have access to their own garden; it impacts on the elderly and infirm and their carers; and it sets a precedent that charging for access to parks in Basingstoke and Deane is OK. It is not OK.

The proposal was passed as an "urgent matters" item at Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council cabinet this evening. You no longer have to pay to park at Eastrop Park! We won! Thanks again for all your support.

Further to the April election results, the council changed control on 18 May. Tomorrow evening at 18.30 the new Cabinet will consider a proposal to remove the parking charges at Eastrop Park altogether. This is fantastic news! You can watch the cabinet meeting live https://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/webcast - or you can come along and lend your support on the night; you can even ask to speak.
If the cabinet passes this it will mean that all our hard work paid off and your signatures were so valuable in making democracy happen!
