The UK Government to Create a Citizens' Assembly for Climate and Ecological Justice

This is a call for the UK Government to declare a climate emergency and then to create and be led by a Citizens' Assembly for Climate and Ecological Justice. This is in order:

- to refocus the urgent work needed to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
- to commit to a zero-carbon target by 2025.
- to stop fracking for fossil fuels - including Oil, Natural Gas, Shale Gas and Coal.
- to commit to generating energy using the most effective renewable energy sources, such as Wind Power, Solar Panels and Plant Biomass.
- to invest more in renewable energy sources as well as carbon capture and storage.
- to implement legislation that will hold UK companies and Multinational Corporations accountable for their Environmental Impact, including, but not limited to, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions.*
- to protect our nature and wildlife - particularly to save endangered species.
- to save the future of the earth for the future of our children, children's children, children's children's children, children's children's children's children and beyond.

Why is this important?

"The world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only 12 years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C. Beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.

The authors of the landmark report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) say urgent and unprecedented changes are needed to reach the target, which they say is affordable and feasible although it lies at the most ambitious end of the COP 2021 Paris agreement pledge to keep temperatures between 1.5C and 2C. The half-degree difference could also prevent corals from being completely eradicated and ease pressure on the Arctic."

With Greta Thunberg launching the Skolstrejk för Klimatet outside the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm, this week's protests in London where Extinction Rebellion are participating in non-violent direct action and civil disobedience as well as all of the people across the globe standing up for the world’s future, we must all see it as our responsibility to declare a Climate Emergency, urge the Government to do so and to take urgent action now.

Two days into Theresa May's office, the UK Government disbanded the Department for Energy and Climate Change. It is key to start a Citizens' Assembly on Climate Change and Ecological Justice in order to move forward, open new doors and take action to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

This revolution cannot be ignored.
Climate Change cannot be ignored.

Under the 2008 Climate Change Act, the UK is legally required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050 on 1990 levels. It also introduced ‘carbon budgets’ which cap emissions over successive 5-year periods and must be set 12 years in advance.

It is fast approaching 12 years since 2008.

The UK Government must act now to reset the next ‘carbon budget’ to zero in order to mitigate climate change.

Following the COP 2021 Paris Agreement, Amber Rudd MP was questioned by the Commons Select Committee in December 2015 on the outcome of Paris Climate Change talks**. The "review process" set for 2020 is legally binding for every country to set caps and targets; this deal provides the UK and the countries of the Paris Agreement to declare a climate emergency and affect real change. It is in the UK's interest to continue these talks and relationships with EU and International Commissioners to make it easier to deliver on new targets both with Developing countries and at home.

The UK is responsible for 1.5% of the world's emissions, yet UK multinational corporations such as Shell, BP, BHP Billiton and Anglo American account for 15% of global emissions.

Climate change cannot be ignored.
This revolution cannot be ignored.

We must all ACT NOW. And it is the responsibility of the UK Government to lead by example and be led by example.

Things you can do:
- Join the collective direct action - Extinction Rebellion @ExtinctionR https://rebellion.earth or School Strike for the Climate @GretaThunberg
- Talk with your friends, family, colleagues and teachers about climate change and ways you can reduce your carbon footprint.
- Cycle or walk to work/school.
- Eat less meat and dairy products – particularly beef.
- Insulate homes and increase energy efficiency.
- Switch to renewable green energy - install solar panels - "recent weeks of sunny weather have helped solar power to smash a series of records in the UK, and solar panels have regularly been providing more than a fifth of the country’s electricity generation for several hours a day" !!!
- If you set your mind to it, you can come up with all sorts of new amazing ideas to help to combat climate change.
