STOP BUILDING NEW TOWER BLOCKS UNTIL NEW, EFFECTIVE FIRE SAFTEY REGULATIONS IN PLACE

We cannot wait until there's another tower block fire and more people die - government action to HALT the building of ALL skyscrapers must be taken NOW.

Why is this important?

455 NEW TALL BUILDINGS ARE IN THE PIPELINE FOR LONDON

Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy former housing minister Natalie Elphicke called "for a moratorium on tower block starts (new builds) as part of a report on high-rise safety": https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/stop-building-new-tower-blocks-until-safety-can-be-guaranteed-a3574051.html. Tulip Siddiq, MP for Camden & Kilburn, has also requested this from the Secretary of State

Alok Sharma Minister of State (Communities and Local Government) replied to Tulip Siddiq "We do not intend to put a moratorium on new development of tower blocks. Where new tower blocks are being built, they must meet the requirements of the Building Regulations." (Holding answer received on 13 July 2017).

More than 80 people died in the Grenfell fire, BECAUSE current fire safety regulations within the Building Regulations are wholly inadequate. This means effectively that Alok Sharma is condoning the possibility of more people dying in any tower block that has been or will be built under the old regulations.

The Government must be held to account for not implementing the coroner's fire safety recommendations following the fatal Lakanal House fire in Camberwell in 2009: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/ec-letter-to-DCLG-pursuant-to-rule43-28March2013.pdf. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/commentisfree/2017/jun/19/grenfell-tower-lakanal-house-inquest-fire-safety. If they had, the Grenfell tragedy would not have occurred.

New Building Regulations must reappraise ALL aspects of fire safety for ALL tower blocks -
- to include but not limited to:

1. Fire safety regulations incorporated in planning permissions
2. Non combustible materials
3. Sprinklers in all public areas
4. A minimum of two ventilated escape routes: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/24/world/europe/grenfell-tower-london-fire.html?mcubz=0
5. A height limit that does not exceed the level reachable by fire hoses
6. Compartmentation: http://www.lwf.co.uk/bulletin/fire-precautions-compartmentation/
7. Full transparency and scrutiny of all fire safety documentation
8. Effective and up-to-date fire-fighting measures and fire detection systems
9. Open liaison between residents and landlords regarding fire safety
10. Annual fire safety checks and maintenance
11. Enforcement of regulations
