Stop the Nuclear Laundry Being Trucked Out of Sellafield

Shut Down the Illegal Nuclear Laundry at Lillyhall Business Park and tell Sellafield to wash its laundry on site.

Why is this important?

Allerdale Borough Council is considering giving retrospective planning to a private nuclear laundry washing up to 7.75 tonnes of Sellafield's dirty washing a day. The Ltd. company has no planning permission but was rewarded a radioactive substances permit from the Environment Agency (following a one month consultation which no one knew about) for every radioactive isotope you can think of and then some.

Sellafield has its own dedicated supply of top quality fresh water but it is now using the public water supply to wash nuclear laundry. The nuclear laundry (Energy Coast Laundry) is 16 miles away from the Sellafield site at Lillyhall Business Park, near a college, play facilities for young children and food outlets. Companies House list the laundry as "Washing and (dry)cleaning of textile and fur products." The Company themselves have a crib sheet for prospective employees which states: "“Energy Coast Laundry Ltd is the Nuclear Professional arm and sister company to the Shortridge Group, owned and governed by the same directors but with a particular focus on Nuclear Industry Workwear and the cleaning and presentation of these products to and for our customer Mitie. We deal with six types of article or garment. These are towels, socks, pants, vests, shirts and trousers. We pick up two vehicle loads from Sellafield daily and turnaround the loads within twenty-four hours. Our core working hours are from 0500 to 1700 daily this does flex depending on the business needs. We produce over 6 tonnes a day on normal operation our production record is 7.75 tonnes in a day with equated to 775 10kg bags of clean processed laundry.”

This is outrageous.

Objection to the Nuclear Laundry which has been operating for almost a year on the Lillyhall Business Park near Workington - without planning permission. Following a long battle, Allerdale Borough Council finally admitted that the nuclear laundry did need planning permission. A cursory retrospective planning meeting is planned for the 1st October - we were only informed of this a few days ago and told that we had to reapply to speak (we have previously asked to speak prior to the date being set). This is a shocking scandal. The meeting will take place at 1pm The Wave, Maryport on 1st Oct. There will be a hastily arranged demo outside from 11.30 am - see you there! Sellafield have their own dedicated fresh water supplies now they want the public water supply too.

Allerdale Borough Council are continuing to allow this laundry to operate and there has been no definite date given for the (retrospective) planning decision. Incredibly the council have made it clear they are likely to rubber stamp this appalling nuclear laundry washing up to 7.75 tons of Sellafields laundry every day. This is despite the nuclear laundry flaunting the normal rules of planning….what else are they flaunting and why is Sellafield washing its dirty clothes on the Lillyhall Industrial Estate using the public water supply to dilute and disperse radioactive crapola into the public drains? https://mariannewildart.wordpress.com/2019/09/08/local-government-ombudsman-refuse-to-take-action-against-allerdale-borough-council-meanwhile-nuclear-laundry-is-washing-nearly-8-tons-a-day-of-sellafields-dirty-laundry-without-planning-permission/

The following is extracted from a letter from a local resident , To Allerdale Borough Council
Your Ref: FUL/2019/0187. I object in the strongest possible terms to the nuclear laundry, referred to somewhat euphemistically as the 'Energy Coast Laundry', being given a 'wave through' in its retrospective planning application. ... There is no justification for trucking lorry loads of laundry about the West Coast of Cumbria when there are laundry facilities at Sellafield. ... Sellafield has its own water supply. This means that its water usage can be monitored and is secure. I would like this matter to be discussed at County Council level. I have heard that no-one speaks out against Sellafield because they have so much power locally and are such a major employer. This cannot be allowed to mean that they do as they like,
