Stop privatisation of the Education System

Dear Mr Gove,

“Evidence shows that the current direction of Education Policy is damaging our children and young people. We demand that you stop the moves towards privatisation, and instead defend a child-centred system where all pupils can develop their academic, physical, technical, creative and emotional potential, leading to well rounded citizens able to lead full lives. Education should be provided for children and not for profit.”

Why is this important?

Did you know that instead of having their needs met, increasing numbers of children are being illegally excluded from school, particularly those with Special Educational Needs:
“At a conservative estimate, this affects thousands of children in several hundred schools” , The Children’s Commissioner for England

Or that three children in every classroom of 30 has a diagnosable mental health disorder? Pressure at school is a major cause:
“Schools are getting more and more like exam factories”. Young Minds 2013

There is a deep concern from parents, professionals, academics and young people about the relentless drive from Government towards an increasingly competitive education system. This will only be made worse by Mr Gove's desire to make all free schools and academies able to make a profit. There is much research-based evidence to show this drive is damaging children’s well being and eroding their rights.
Evidence shows that in order to learn children need:

Their basic needs for food, warmth, security and love to be met
To be free from anxiety and fear of failure or exclusion
To have opportunities for self directed play and exploration
To have access to the natural world
To have confident and well supported teachers who are free to respond creatively to individual children
A curriculum rich in practical, art-based and academic subjects
Attention from parents, carers and friends
An environment which models empathy and co-operation
Safety to recover from trauma and loss
A belief that there are no limits to learning.

If you want to see our children flourish in a system based on what the experts know about child development and learning, sign this petition and become a link in the chain of change.

We will also be on streets all over the country collecting signatures. Our aim is to join this on-line petition with signed paper links, forming a giant paper chain which will be delivered to the Government..

Current and future Governments can ignore their employees, but they cannot ignore their voters. We need at least 10,000 signatures to shake them out of their arrogance and get them listening. 100,000 may force a debate in parliament. Sign today and get everyone you know to sign also.

Have you seen Gove's latest plan? He wants all children to be ranked in national league tables! Teachers are outraged but that is not enough to stop them. We must all make our views known. Competition between children only harms them in the long run, even those who seem to do well. We need a system which allows children to grow up with a sense of co-operation and empathy or the kind of society the create will not be one worth living in. Please find friends, family or allies to add their names to our petition. Dont forget young people too need to be given a say.
