To: Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport

We want a better environment for Bordesley Village

Here are our three priorities:

1. Tackling the volume of traffic on the road, including the unprecedented increase of HGVs and construction traffic; exacerbated by planning decisions that have not been discussed with residents in any consultation.

Solution: We want Worcestershire County Council to work with businesses and the local community to re-route traffic, especially HGVs, to the A435, through a Freight Advisory Plan.

2. The speed of the traffic on the road, causing increased noise and air pollution as well as a danger to pedestrians. The Department for Transport classify Bordesley as a village, and we want to be treated as such. Cutting speed can significantly reduce vehicle emissions. Reducing speed by 6mph would cut noise levels by 40%.

Solution: We want a speed reduction to 30mph – enforceable and supported by a gateway.

3. The traffic queues caused by the limited capacity of the traffic lights, further exacerbated by planned long-term roadworks over the next three to five years.

Solution: We want Worcestershire Council to divert traffic away from the A441 during the next 3-5 years to avoid long queues and delays through Bordesley.

Why is this important?

Harmful emissions from vehicles are responsible for 90% of air pollution – and in Birmingham alone, up to 900 people per year die early as a result of air pollution.

High speed limits, high traffic volumes and queuing vehicles significantly increase air pollution – and we recognise all of this on the A441 in Bordesley.

Over the years, Bordesley has seen an increase in traffic levels, traffic queues and heavy vehicles. In addition, Bordesley has seen a significant increase in speeding vehicles. As a result of all these factors Bordesley has high levels of air and noise pollution which is now affecting the health of the residents.
