Campaign to Save Local Pubs

CAMRA is a consumer group with over 168,000 members and acts as an independent voice for real ale drinkers and pub goers. Our vision is to have quality real ale and thriving pubs in every community.
This page has been created to give CAMRA members and non-members a chance to save local pubs through online petitions and to share them with other campaigners in their local community. Due to this, not every petition listed below has been organised by a CAMRA branch or member.

Campaign to Save The Norman KingKEVIN McCLOUD, MBE -"Dunstable is short on great historic buildings and so the removal of any ancient scrap of architecture from the town is an appalling idea. We need to conserve the old to help us understand the present (and for that matter, the future) and heritage is not a burden but an amenity and a great blessing for our society. It gives us a sense of place and connection. The loss of the ancient fabric of The Norman King will be a crying shame and a further erosion of that connection. It's appalling that there has been no collective will among the authorities to keep as much as possible that remains of this fine old building and to insist on a sensitive program of repair and even reinstatement of the structure and roof lost to the fire. Apart from anything else, I used to drink there and will miss it." - KEVIN McCLOUD, MBE282 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Andrea Tompkins

Save CooksonsWe are concerned that the pub may be being mismanaged and intentionally run down, marking it as an nonviable concern resulting in possible closure. We feel the Pub has the potential to bring a huge amount of value to the local area, beyond what it could contribute economically. It can provide community infrastructure that would otherwise not exist, bring together neighbours and members of the community that may not otherwise come into contact, and play a part in the heritage and culture of an area. Historically it has supported aspirations of local authorities, by helping to increase individual well being, bring vulnerable, isolated and disparate groups into closer contact, as well as contributing to the regeneration of jobs. Finally, locally six pubs and social clubs have closed, making the Cooksons the only pub left standing along a once vibrant area. If the Cooksons was also to go, then the loss would we feel be a further nail in the coffin for an already stressed and continually disparate community.12 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Stephen Maguire

save the junctionThe building is not only a famous landmark in featherstone it is the hub of our community. For many years it has been at the heart of peoples lives from wedding receptions, birthday parties, and funeral wakes. Many people in the area tell stories of happy times in the junction, more recently it has become a music venue and also a supporter of local charities. We have a hardcore of regulars who want the pub to remain and the clientele has greatly increased thanks to the efforts of the recent landlord. It would be a tragedy for the town were it to be sold and re-developed.1,289 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by David Goulding

Save the Red Lion Public House - Gedney Hill, LincolnshireThe Red Lion Public House dates back to the 17th Century, and is an important historic Grade II Listed building, and an irreplaceable feature of the village of Gedney Hill in rural Lincolnshire. In the past it has been a thriving business at the centre of the community, but in recent years neglect, mismanagement and underinvestment on the part of the owner has led to it's decline and closure. The building has now been sold to an individual who intends to convert the site into a house, and demolish part of the porch structure on the front of the oldest part of the listed building. This is now the only public house remaining in this area, and many local people believe that under the right ownership it could again be a popular venue and a successful and sustainable business. Please help to ensure the future of this vital hub of local village life by signing the petition.210 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Alex Brown

List the Boleyn Tavern as an Asset of Community ValueCAMRA calls the Boleyn “one of the more spectacular late-Victorian pubs in London” and its amazing interior is largely intact- an absolute rarity. More importantly, it serves a vital community function in a part of London where very few pubs remain. There is concern that the departure of West Ham football club from the nearby Boleyn ground, and the subsequent development of the ground for housing might impact the pub’s future. This petition is an attempt to afford some extra protection to a unique part of London’s history and a vital community asset.87 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Tristan O'Dwyer

Save The SwinleyBecause it's a village pub we are a close knit village young and old a like this would tear the heart from the village. We have two lady ladies as present who have made a fantastic change in such a short time. Greene King have sold the lease behind everyone's back after they promised it would remain a proper pub as its a prime site we already have one Chinese restaurant the last thing we need is a Thai less than 100 yards d own the road.127 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Mandy Lee

The WindmillThe Windmill Public House is a traditional meeting place and community focus for the village. It is registered as an Asset of Community Value [AVC] . It is within a conservation area and adjacent to Charlton House which is a historic listed building within the Green Belt. CAMRA North Hertfordshire Branch argue that the changes proposed by the current owner will preclude it from from ever returning to having the status of a much loved village pub.23 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Jeremy Ainsworth-Smith

Save the William IV pubThe pub was sold to developers by Young’s Brewery, even though an offer to purchase to run this as a community pub was made not far off the full market value. This was declined by them. Meanwhile locals were informed that the pub was being sold as a going concern only to find it boarded up overnight and sold to developers. The William IV is the only non-gastro, hotel or family orientated pub left in the village. It had planning rejected on it in the past as the council deemed it important to the community. It has a very special atmosphere and there are very few places in the country left like this pub. The William IV is the beating heart of our community, where community and charitable events are organised, old and young mix and discussions are held on village life. Once the pub is developed it will be will be gone forever. Since its closure, people are travelling outside the village to socialise and have been split apart. Please list this pub as an Asset of Community Value, so we have the chance to rescue the heart of our village.1,209 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Juliette Cockell

Save the Acton Arms MorvilleOur pub is an important part of the local community, we do not want to loose it. We would like to see the Acton open again, we miss the contact with our friends and neighbours. Many teams are run from it, its a place where you can find help for all sorts and it can be so much more. Some of our locals have offered the pub company to run it as a managed house so the pub can reopen again but so far the pub-co has refused. We don't understand why, it is much easier to find a tenant for a pub that is open and running, or do they have plans which none of us know about?231 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Lilly Jones
