Improve the UK’s air quality standards
Please implement the recommendations of the United Nation's Special Rapporteur on human rights related to air pollution. These are summarised in Section VI of the report (reference A/HRC/36/41/Add.1.)
Why is this important?
***Update May 2018 ***
The UK has been referred to Europe’s highest court for failing to tackle illegal levels of air pollution. Read more here:
The UN report covers air pollution, fracking and the disposal of toxic and nuclear waster. These are all issues of huge concern to ordinary people.
In particular, air pollution causes an estimated 40,000 early deaths every year in Britain and was declared a “public health emergency” in 2016. Doctors have voiced their concerns about this.
The UN report's author, Baskut Tuncak, has said that he is "alarmed that despite repeated judicial instruction, the UK government continues to flout its duty to ensure adequate air quality and protect the rights to life and health of its citizens. It has violated its obligations.”
Vulnerable groups were worst affected by air pollution, he said: “Children, older persons and people with pre-existing health conditions are at grave risk of mortality, morbidity and disability, with magnified risks among the poor and minorities.”
