Motorway litter

Motorway litter

I am writing to you as Chair of the Commons' Select Committee on Transport to ask you to consider the problem of motorway litter in your current inquiry into the Strategic Road Network.

Peter Silverman of Clean Highways has submitted a report to your committee which demonstrates that the Highways Agency's failure to properly manage their service providers is putting the Secretary of State for Transport in breach of his statutory duty to ensure, so far as is practicable, that the motorway verges are kept clear of litter and refuse.

It can be seen here: www.cleanhighways.co.uk/legislation/7015

Could your committee please give this report due consideration in preparing your findings.

Why is this important?

Litter on the verges of our motorways is a national disgrace.

Reasons for signing

  • Kills wildlife. Looks terrible and can Be dangerous in wind.
  • Because the state of our litter problem on roads is a National emabrrassment
  • The amount of litter along our roads is a disgrace. Not only do we need a huge clean up campaign, we also need to reeducate people to stop this happening.
