Move the Inverness Bonfire and Fireworks Display to St. Andrew’s Day

The Highland Council, with support from the Inverness Common Good Fund, organises the Inverness Bonfire and Fireworks display at the Bught Park on the 5th November each year.  This petition urges these organisations to move the display to St. Andrew’s Day on the 30th November, a national holiday which celebrates Scotland’s culture.

Why is this important?

Many people are unaware of the origins of Bonfire Night.  It started as a celebration of the foiling of a plot to blow up the House of Parliament by a group of Catholic conspirators.  They were protesting about religious persecution by the Protestant establishment.

In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day is a week-long celebration with numerous events across the country which draw in large number of tourists.  A Bonfire and Fireworks Display on St. Andrew’s Day could be a catalyst for more events to bring in tourists at a quiet time of year.

Let’s celebrate today’s Scottish culture rather than the sectarian events of 400 years ago.
