Dear Mr Paterson

You should immediately resign your post as Environment Secretary, and persuade the Coalition to appoint a replacement who understands environmental issues and who will vote to protect the environment and work towards a sustainable future.

Why is this important?

In a crucial European environmental vote regarding the protection of pollinating insects especially Bees, you voted against banning neonicotinoid pesticides.

It is well known that these chemicals are a significant factor in reducing bee populations and that bees are crucial in pollinating a very high percentage of all plants, especially food producing crops.

This ecological dependancy is common knowledge to any ecologist, naturalist, conservationist, gardener or environmental expert.

It is unacceptable therefore that this country's Environment Secretary is apparently unaware of these basic facts, but instead has decided to side with multinational pesticide manufacturers and the global agri-business lobby and be an apologist for them.

Instigating and continuing the culling of a protected species which scientists have said are only a distraction from dealing with the real problem, ie blaming badgers for bTB in cattlle, is another of this man's reprehensible assaults on our environment.

His ignorance is putting us all at risk of a climate catastrophe. We need a leader who understands its now time for real sustainable energy like wind, solar and green gas. Also anyone who votes against banning neonicotinoid pesticide should not be an Environment Secretary. He decisions are potentially a danger to our very existence. Get Patterson out!

It's about time they got an Environment Secretary who actually cared about and understood something about the environment. As for his latest plan: it's not simply a case of "It's ok to chop down 10,000 old trees if we replace them with a million new trees." These pockets of ancient forest represent unique ecosystems which have been evolving for thousands of years. You can't transplant that! Chop down any part of it and you lose whole swathes of organisms.
