Owen Paterson should resign as Environment Secretary

Dear Mr Paterson

You should immediately resign your post as Environment Secretary, and persuade the Coalition to appoint a replacement who understands environmental issues and who will vote to protect the environment and work towards a sustainable future.

Why is this important?

In a crucial European environmental vote regarding the protection of pollinating insects especially Bees, you voted against banning neonicotinoid pesticides.

It is well known that these chemicals are a significant factor in reducing bee populations and that bees are crucial in pollinating a very high percentage of all plants, especially food producing crops.

This ecological dependancy is common knowledge to any ecologist, naturalist, conservationist, gardener or environmental expert.

It is unacceptable therefore that this country's Environment Secretary is apparently unaware of these basic facts, but instead has decided to side with multinational pesticide manufacturers and the global agri-business lobby and be an apologist for them.

Reasons for signing

  • It is most regrettable than any of this could be true. If not a resignation then a pledge to be guided by environmental needs only, disregarding any commercial or ambitious whim.
  • Same . Save the bees
  • We need an Environment secretary who is totally 'in touch' with the environment, this man has alternative agenda's
