We call on Stockport Municipal Borough Council and the Stockport Clinical Commissioning Group to reverse the decision to close the Joseph Whitworth Community Centre (formerly known as Wellbeing Centre) on Chestergate. This centre is of enormous benefit to community groups, charities and NHS support services.
Why is this important?
The Joseph Whitworth Centre, formerly known as the Wellbeing Centre, is a much cherished community resource that supports the efforts of many groups working for the wellbeing of Stockport residents. Closure of the centre will deprive the social knitters, dancers, smoking-quitters, singers, writers and help-seekers, of a source of support and information in an easily accessible part of Stockport centre.
The closure of this critical resource comes in addition to drastic cuts to mental health service provision in Stockport. The Centre is now needed more than ever. We appeal to Stockport Council and Stockport CCG to continue to cover the cost of rent and rates of this precious resource. We need help, not cuts.
