Require schools to teach about the two World Wars in new National Curriculum for History (England)

To commemorate 2014 as the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War and as a mark of respect to the fallen, the Government should make teaching about both world wars a requirement of the new 2014 National Curriculum for History rather than giving it specifically optional status, which is currently set out in these terms:
“… this could include:
Examples (non-statutory)…
• the First World War and the Peace Settlement…
• the Second World War and the wartime leadership of Winston Churchill”

Why is this important?

We must ensure that we do not forget the sacrifices made during the two world wars and that we learn something from the past.
