Introduce a mining exhibition at Snibston Colliery

Introduce a mining exhibition at Snibston Colliery

Create an exhibition to celebrate the history of the site and maintain the site in good working order so that the mining industry can have a place to be remembered.

Why is this important?

It is important to keep the mining heritage alive around Leicestershire. The miners and their families are passionate about having their heritage continued. The council should make sure there is an exhibition of all the mining works and tours of the mining shaft.

The history that surrounds Snibston Colliery is truly remarkable as George Stephenson and his son Robert Stephenson were very much part of the setting up and shinking of a shaft at Snibston.

In 2015 it was very sad when the Snibston Discovery Park was demolished, a lot of people fought to keep this alive. It was an amazing exhibition with hands on products for children to see and had an auditorium for films etc. The place now looks very derelict with only the Century Theatre.

How it will be delivered

I would like to take the petition to Leicestershire County Council and be able to discuss this with them.

Reasons for signing

  • Snibston Discovery Museum was amazing, and it was incredibly shortsighted for LCC to force through its closure. I would strongly support the re-opening of an educational facility attached to this historical monument.
  • The area deserves something new and to generate income to the area, the local authority needs to invest some of the monies paid by households back into the Coalville area. Snibston museum closure was a disgrace leaving Coalville little else in entertainment. Maintain the history and dignity of our miners.
  • My kids loved going there and it was really informative with local miners explaining what it was like. Our country is built on coal production. Why are councils allowed to destroy educational facilities about an essential part of our heritage?
