Save Ashburton Railway Station

Include the Railway Station Building as a protected Building (and re-list as a listed building) as part of the Chuley Road Master Plan.

Why is this important?

This is a unique terminus building with a roof attributed to I K Brunel. It was built before 1872 when the line from Totnes to Ashburton was opened. It was taken over by the Dart Valley Railway in 1965 but because the A38 Dual carriageway was about to be build on the track bed between Ashburton and Buckfastleigh this was not part of the Light Railway order of April 1969. It then became a garage (Station Garage) which is likely to be closed in the future and the building and the area around it developed. It is not a listed building but is of historical importance. It needs protection from demolition.

How it will be delivered

The original petition was delivered in person on Thursday 11th December 2014 - the day before the last day to receive comments on the Master Plan. The Master Plan has now gone back for further Consultation and I intend to re-submit the petition with the extra 800 plus signatures (to date) added.

A Public Meeting about the future of Ashburton Railway in Ashburton Town Hall has been arranged by Ashburton Neighbourhood Plan Group on Wednesday 25th September at 7.30. Local supporters of the railway station would be very welcome to attend.

NEW PLANNING APPLICATION for Brewery Meadow (Tuckers Store).
No real issues for the railway as the original planning application for Brewery Meadow has been changed. If you wish to view or comment on the application it is number 0035/18 on the DNPA planning page www.dartmoor.gov.uk/living-and-working/planning/planning-applications .The 4 houses which were objected to by 40/50 with the previous application (2 years ago) have been taken out of the site. Therefore the former track will not be blocked by this plan. Please note that objections which mention the railway as the only reason for the objection as happened recently with the former caravan sales, Outdoor Experience, are not helpful to those organisations and bodies trying to re-instate the railway in the long term but do feel free to mention its proximity.

We are currently campaigning to safeguard the long term future of Ashburton Station.
This historic Great Western Railway branch line terminus is a unique Brunelian style structure, an important survivor of a bygone age. Initially revived as part of the current South Devon Railway, Ashburton was severed from the remainder of the steam railway in 1971 by the building of a trunk road.
We particularly need anyone wanting the return of the railway to fill in the questionnaire about the Chuley Road Master Plan which has gone back for further consultation and evidence of local concern is particularly needed.

An outline planning application has gone in to the local planning authority which will compromise the future of the Station.
Brewery Meadow, Ashburton. (Also known as Tuckers) Application Number 0441/15
Outline application for re-development to 32 residential units, public parking and flood channel works (all matters reserved)
Suggested Comment or similar :- Part of the application compromises the footprint of the former railway line and I object to any housing being built on land that will stop any future plans to re-instate Ashburton’s Railway Station to link back with Buckfastleigh Railway Station at some time in the future

and more importantly join the friends group. We particularly need Ashburton residents to support the railway coming back to Ashburton sometime in the future. DNPA seem to think it is only railway enthusiasts and not local residents in support of this.
The Chuley Road Masterplan submitted by the Dartmoor National Park Authority ingnored the plea to safeguard the line of the railway route. DNPA has accepted a report from its planners in which no railway bodies have been consulted, a report which consequently contains several major inaccuracies. In doing so, Members have endorsed the short-sighted predisposition towards other uses for the site, and have not given a fair hearing to the railway proposition.
