Save Loddiswell Old School Playing Fields from Development
This campaign has ended.
We are opposed to the building of houses on the old school field in Loddiswell.
The village does not need additional houses and there is already too much pressure on road and sewage infrastructure.
We would like to keep the field as a green space for the village with the planting of a community orchard and creation of a nature reserve, accessible to all including the elderly and less able. This would be beneficial to the health and well-being of the residents of the Loddiswell.
We ask the Council:
1) Not to sell the field for housing development
2) To allow the village of Loddiswell to keep it as a green space.
Why is this important?
It is the last green space in the heart of the village and any development would be detrimental to the rare and endangered wildlife that inhabits it.
The old school field is in the heart of Loddiswell, it has been left largely untouched since the primary school moved to its new site on the edge of the village in 2018. It would not have been ploughed or sprayed for more than 50 years, so is unimproved grassland. Over the last 5 years it has evolved into a tussocky meadow, which is a great habitat for voles and other small mammals and an ideal hunting ground for barn owls one of which has been seen hunting there. It also has a rich diversity of plants and is home to dormice, hedgehogs and slow worms. Greater and lesser horseshoe and barbastelle bats have been recorded foraging there too.
It is a key asset of the village of Loddiswell and would increasingly become an hugely important village asset which can be enhanced for the benefit of the community and local wildlife.
How it will be delivered
The petition will be delivered to SHDC, DCC and LPC.
