Social groups for autistic adults in Scotland

Help us continue to fund and maintain the running of NAS (Scotland) Social Groups to help adults with autism build up and maintain friendships.

Our Social Groups help us build self-esteem and connect with other people on the autism spectrum. It also allows us to identify with other people on the spectrum and talk about their daily challenges. We plan our own activities but some of these have to be booked in advance.

Why is this important?

Adults with autism and ASD find it very difficult to maintain friendships in mainstream society. We rely on public funding to make this possible but right now because our funding pot is dry we are relying on a membership model to maintain the running of our social groups. We shouldn't have to resort to this drastic measure but we have no choice. I personally have ASD, which means me and my fellow service users can find making sense of the world around us difficult at times. We're all on different levels of the spectrum so our difficulties vary from person to person. Autism is neurological and lifelong. It affects girls as well as boys, but goes undiagnosed in girls most of the time because they hide it better.
It is a developmental disability that starts in early childhood and continues throughout adult life. My Social Programmes Manager is Sandra Buckley and she cares about her service users and their right to socialise within a secure group setting. We need on average £50,000 or more to keep our social groups running in their current format and possibly fund short breaks as well as other events.
If we can get as many as 40,000 signatures to persuade Nicola Sturgeon to put my request into action I believe my petition will pay off. Even if we get less than 40,000 I would still be very grateful for this amazing effort. Just help me get as many signatures as possible. Our Glasgow office is at Central Chambers, 1st floor, 109 Hope Street. Thank you very much.

How it will be delivered

I will email the signatures to Nicola Sturgeon.

Sorry for the late reply folks.
Due to the ongoing pandemic our Social Groups have been put on hold since January last year and I don’t yet know what’s happening or when they will restart. Please keep your signatures coming, thanks for doing that and I appreciate it.

Good news!! Autistic adults in Scotland could be spared the stressful job of having to explain we have a right to claim full PIP in a landmark court ruling 11 days ago. Read the full article by clicking on the link below.

I currently have 173 signatures.
At the moment we are still completely unfunded and are now heavily relying on membership fees to cover the cost of running social groups which the NAS Scotland main body will not pay for, even though our groups are run by them. They pay for education and training but they are not willing to pay for the running of our social groups. I am asking the Scottish government to help us make this happen, but I need the backing of the Scottish public to help us get the funding we need so badly. I am counting on all of you to sign this petition as it means a lot to me and I can't do it alone. We need your help!

A welcome piece of additional information for me to slip in here:
NAS Scotland have just signed up to the Charter for Involvement which is operated by the National Involvement Network (NIN) which is supported by ARC Scotland, and I was there at our Glasgow office to see it happen. Now I would like Social Groups to be included in the Charter. Signing up means we have made a commitment to supporting service users. I will be kept up to date with emails about the progress made and also future meetings where I can further bring up the inclusion of Scotland's Social Group users I think should be supported in the Charter for Involvement. For full details on the Charter for Involvement and what it's all about, go to: . I have 163 signatures on this petition so far, and your help is greatly appreciated to help us achieve some funding. Thank you!

Amazing!! 14 signatures, thank you!! Please keep them coming. Why not ask friends and family to sign the petition also and family members can get their closest friends to do the same. People power can make a big difference when we all come together for special causes we care about so much.
