STOP 46% import duty on tents in Nepal

This campaign has ended.

STOP 46% import duty on tents in Nepal

STOP charging the 46% import duty on tents and other relief items arriving at Kathmandu airport. #STOP46 #Nepal

Why is this important?

UPDATE: The latest word we have is that the Nepalese government is now not allowing individuals to receive items at Kathmandu airport. Relief items have to be addressed to an INGO / NGO. Anything that is addressed to individuals is being seized by the government. So many people, like Suman's family, have not received aid and yet cannot receive relief items that have been sent from family abroad. Ke garne? What to do? We are looking into whether there is anything we can do. Because of the changes I am going to end this campaign and send the petition. I want to send it to let them know peoples opposition to the tax even though the situation has changed. I understand that i can reactivate the campaign later if the situation changes again. Thankyou for everyones support.

STOP THE 46% IMPORT DUTY ON TENTS AND OTHER RELIEF ITEMS IN NEPAL
The Government of Nepal is making money from its peoples suffering. It has introduced a 46% import tax on tents and other goods which are clearly for relief.
My husband Suman has returned to Nepal to help his family, living in one of the worst affected areas of the earthquakes. They have received the grand total of 2000 rupees, about £13, in the weeks since the first quake. They have lost everything but they have been left to fend for themselves.
The Nepalese government is ineffective in providing support to its stricken people and international aid is only reaching a few. So many Nepalese people in the UK have been helping their families and neighbours back home by sending donated tents and other useful items. (We were kindly donated tents and sleeping bags which will arrive in Kathmandu later this week). These were duty free but it seems that the government has seen an opportunity to make some money and has introduced a 46% import tax on them.
This is abhorrent. Please help us to put pressure on the Nepalese government to reverse this.

After the first earthquake there was international uproar about the government charging import duty. They did respond and waived it for certain items for a short period of time. The trouble is there is still a huge need, as i have explained above, and there is still lots of items, clearly for relief, that are being taxed. We have read on documents on the customs webpages that normal duty for tents should be 30% and sleeping bags 20%. This is high enough anyway, but where they get the justification to charge 46% duty is beyond me!! We have contacted them to ask but have received no reply as of yet.
