STOP THE SHAMEFUL DEPORTATION OF KENTISH TOWN'S STOLY JANKOVIC

30/07/17

As a signatory to the petition “Stop the Shameful Deportation of Kentish Town’s Stoly Jankovic” earlier this year, you will certainly be delighted to know that the Home Office confirmed yesterday that Stoly has been granted leave to remain in the UK, with permission to work. In 2019, he will become eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain.

Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of his legal team, his MP Keir Starmer, and each and every one of you, justice has been done. To all of Stoly’s supporters locally, across the UK and even across the globe, this is the moment to say a huge THANK YOU and well done!

STOP PRESS: We have just had an update from Stoly's MP Keir Starmer, who has received written confirmation from Robert Goodwill, the immigration minister, that Stoly has been granted a 14-day stay of his deportation while he prepares his legal case.

CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU to all his supporters who have signed the petition so far.

This opportunity for Stoly to make his case is all thanks to you, and also to Keir Starmer, who has been working tirelessly and to great effect on his behalf. This is not the end of the road: there is still a difficult legal case ahead, and we will keep you posted to let you know how you can continue to support Stoly over the coming days and weeks.

But for now, this has been a good weekend's work - well done, and watch this space!

STOP THE SHAMEFUL DEPORTATION OF KENTISH TOWN'S STOLY JANKOVIC

We, the undersigned, demand an immediate stay of deportation for Stojan Jankovic to allow him time to instruct lawyers, so that his case to remain in the UK can be heard.

Why is this important?

Stojan Jankovic, better known to his countless friends across Camden as “Stoly”, was taken to a detention centre in Dorset without warning on the 30th March and is due to be deported from the UK as early as the 4th April.

Stoly has given fifteen years of his life to serving the people of Camden as the much-loved face of Earth, Kentish Town’s long-established wholefood store. To his colleagues and neighbours, his customers and fellow Kentish Town workers, he simply represents the very best of Britain and of Camden: hard work, self-deprecating humour, and a dedication to helping others.

We are horrified and ashamed that instead of celebrating Stoly’s contribution to our country and community, the government is seeking to deport him hurriedly and with barely a nod to due process.

How it will be delivered

We delivered this petition to the Home Office at 12 noon on 3 April. Around 2pm, we learned from Keir Starmer MP, who has been tireless in his support for Stoly, that a 14-day stay of his deportation order has been granted. This does not mean that his situation is resolved, but the extension does at least allow him time to instruct his lawyers and prepare his legal case. We will continue to keep you posted, including ways that Stoly may need your further support over the coming days and weeks.

Reasons for signing

  • Stoly chose the UK as home. He's part of the community, worked hard, paid tax & NI. Every month, in good faith, he reports to the Immigration office, Suddenly arrested with no notice, waiting to be sent back where? His country doesn't exist anymore. He will certainly be homeless at the very least. His home is in the UK. Stoly has a community who respects, loves, and holds him dear. Be decent & fair release Stojan Jankovic. Grant residency. Stop going after soft targets
  • Utterly gobsmacked! If this can happen to a man who was notable for his irreproachable good manners and helpfulness beyond the necessary and his knowledge about the ingredients and food he was selling, then there is something deeply amiss.
  • When it's someone you know, a normal person doing a normal job, who is suddenly arrested, it brings it home to you what a brutal system this is.
