06/10/18 - Proud Ness was fabulous!

Thousands of people have taken part in the biggest LGBT+ event to be held in Inverness in 16 years, according to its organisers.

Highland LGBT Forum said 3,000 people took part in the Proud Ness parade from Falcon Square to Eden Court Theatre.

A similar event was also held in Stornoway, Lewis, - the first of its kind to be held in the Hebrides.

Hundreds carried rainbow flags and balloons as part of Hebridean Pride's parade from An Lanntair to The Carlton.

Recognise the support for the LGBTQI community in Inverness & the Highlands. Allow the pride parade in Inverness

Why is this important?

Every other major city in the UK has this - and for too long Inverness has been (and still is) stuck in the past. Many young people end up moving away from Inverness because of its lack of modern culture and lack of acceptance of anything remotely different from the “norm”.

This has been apparent for many years, but I have been specifically outraged more recently by the publicised petition against the Pride parade this week - as have many others.

I hope that the highland council will allow the parade to go forward and embrace the people who live here for who they are - and not alienate them further by stopping this from happening. It is unfair. I hope to prove this by showing from the petition that so many Inverness citizens are in favour of this event and support them. We are all equal beings.

The voices of a few should not reflect on the city as a whole and everyone should be made to feel welcome here.
The pride parade is an amazing and friendly celebration of culture, and it would be a huge step forward for Inverness if the Highland council allow them to have the parade.

Reasons for signing

  • No one should be made to feel unwelcome, unwanted or ashamed of who they are or who they love. I hope this petition shows that the welcoming side of inverness outnumbers the narrow-minded prejudice side.
  • I’m gay myself and believe we should get a right to parade around Inverness just as they do in other cities.
  • I’m gay myself and I think it’s only fair that we have one

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has signed - an unbelievable amount of signatures at almost 10k. We had great coverage from local and national news (Channel 4) so thanks also to those who showed interest in what was going on, and shone a light on the issue. The Pride event has been given the go ahead! So it’s amazing news for all 🎉 see you all next week at the parade. Rona x

Unbelievable response, almost at 7000 in a couple of days. Thank you to everyone who has signed, it just goes to show that when so many people come together we can spread a positive message and hopefully build towards having a more equal community. Thank you ❤️ And for anyone who hasn’t seen it, this is a link for Donald’s interview with Bryan of MFR:
