Make Universal Credit pay enough to live off

Make Universal Credit pay enough to live off

Urgently fix the problems with Universal Credit so that people are receiving enough money to survive.

Why is this important?

I claim Universal Credit and it isn’t nearly enough to live on - especially with the increased costs of the pandemic. I have to make difficult decisions about what to spend my money on.

Universal Credit has never been fit for purpose - but with increased cuts, the four year benefit freeze, and rising cost of living it's getting harder and harder to make ends meet.

In the last 6 months millions more people - struggling during the pandemic - have had to survive on Universal Credit. With the furlough scheme coming to an end and the economic fallout of coronavirus very much still to come, this number is only going to increase.

We need to urgently fix the problems with Universal Credit so that people are getting enough money to survive, and get through this pandemic.

Reasons for signing

  • Those made redundant, in fact anyone receiving unemployment or disability benefit is awarded so little that living is impossible. The heat or eat payment. The US is currently giving $600 per week to help the unemployed. In the UK we have amongst the lowest levels of social safety nets. Shameful
  • I work as a welfare benefits caseworker. I have seen the devastation that the benefits freeze has created over the past ten years. Now many people who may have labelled others ‘benefit scroungers’ are realising how little they are expected to survive on after years of paying National Insurance. We are apparently the fifth richest country in the world . Why do we have such a high rate of child poverty?
  • No one should have to live on the mockery these Tory’s say is enough to live on, the MPs’ who set what is an acceptable amount seem to forget they are the people’s servants sitting in parliament after being elected by the electorate. They all receive handsome salaries and expenses, paid for from the taxes collected therefore all people should be given an equivalent amount to live on.
