We call on Bolsover District Council to protect Glapwell’s wildlife and heritage.

We, the undersigned, petition Bolsover District Council to protect the wildlife and mature trees at the top of Park Ave in Glapwell from development. We ask the council to stop its sale until covenants can be added to the land to keep it as a green, open public space respecting its status as a Bolsover District community asset.

Why is this important?

The land is one of the few areas of Glapwell that links the village back to its heritage and the old Glapwell Hall. The trees on the land are some of the oldest in the district and they are home to protected species such as bats. The land is much loved by local residents as a space for peace and relaxation.
As BDC rules we need 1000+ signatures from people in the district for this to be debated at full council. We believe that the sale should made open to the widest possible scrutiny.

The petition and associated motion to stop the destruction of the land at today's Council meeting. The motion had been with the Council since May and this petition was formally recognised by the council early this month.

      Despite the first Council debate to be held on the land the Executive pushed ahead and agreed to sell the land to the developer in a meeting late June.

      Today's debate led to a 15 - 13 vote to protect the land. A vote that we won! However, the council informed us after the vote that they had managed to push the transaction through days before this vote.

      Obviously we are shocked by this turn in events and the speed in which the land was sold, and the fact it was done before a democratic debate. We are going to continue the fight and challenge the actions of the Council and appeal to you all to register complaints to either BDC or the ombudsman.
