Refugee Crisis

Aylan, the toddler who drowned fleeing Syria, was just three years old. His town was under attack by Isis. His five year old brother and his mum also died trying to reach safety.

Yet our prime minister has just said ‘we won't take any more refugees’. He thinks that most of us don't care.

But 38 Degrees members do care. We don't want Britain to be the kind of country that turns its back as people drown in their desperation to flee places like Syria.

So let's stand up for Britain's long tradition of helping refugees fleeing war.

  • Afghan interpreters
We owe them a great debt of gratitude for helping the British Forces I translating. They and their families are being murdered by the Taliban They are risking their lives escaping and having to hang around Calais trying to get to Great Britain. It is a disgrace and the powers that are preventing them seeking refuge in the UK should hang their heads in shame

  • UK safe haven for Syrian refugees
Adults and children are dying trying to escape from conflict in their own country. They need a safe haven,in UK, until it is safe to return. UK should cooperate with other EU countries to facilitate their escape, thereby reducing their reliance on criminal traffickers, and then provide temporary accommodation and resources until it is safe for them to return to Syria. NOW is not the time for focus on catching traffickers, nor for political issues, such as limiting immigration into UK

  • Refugees not Migrants
The term migrant can be used for anyone wanting to move from one country to another. The masses escaping wars are doing so in fear of their lives and many would prefer to stay in their home country and will go back as soon as it is safe to. We need to realise this and calling them refugees will help.
