International Women's Day Celebration Events: Talk 'Striking a Light- the East End women (or matchwomen) who changed history', by Louise Raw
In 1888, young, mostly Irish women and girls took on one of the country's most powerful and exploitative employers- what nobody expected was that they would win. Meet the Bryant & May matchwomen, who changed the world for working people and kick-started the modern labour movement, and all whilst wearing fantastic hats!
As a young trade union steward Dr Louise Raw became fascinated by the untold story of these inspiring women, and how and why history had hidden their 'light' and the importance of their struggle. She has made it her mission to bring them, and women like them, to the centre of the historical stage where they belong.
