To: Hailsham Town Council

A safer place in Hailsham for children to learn to ride a bike, scooter or skate.

We would like Hailsham Town Council to consider the concept of a 'circuit/track' around the edges of some of Hailshams green parks/spaces. Such a circuit/track would be created on the permimeter of the Recreation Ground on Western Road, Hailsham Country Park and Maurice Thornton Field. The circuit/track would be wide enough for for two bikes side by side and would accommodate any disabled / adapted bikes and trikes. Purposely designed for toddlers, young children & disabled children/young adults to use.

Why is this important?

We have found teaching our young children to ride a bike, scooter or skate challenging in Hailsham. Pavements mean you often encounter other residents and mobility scooters. A lot of pavements are not suited to cycle on ( for young riders) or are too close to traffic. The popular Cuckoo trail has ditches, it's used by dog walkers, horse riders, pedestrians and bikers which means it does not create the best environment for children to practice and learn safely. This cycle route concept in the parks mentioned could offer a safer environment for children to learn and gain confidence before using larger more populated cycle/skate routes. A dedicated place where children can come together, learn together, encourage fitness and above all be safe in doing so.

A Wet Pour surface is an option, this continuous rubber surface gives a high quality, hard wearing, slip resistant surface requiring little or no maintenance. Mixed on site, the rubber EPDM granule and polyurethane resin mixture is wet laid to various thicknesses onto a prepared area. This can be green to blend in with the green space around it or a road like track.

Please sign if you are in support of outdoor park/green spaces perimeter cycle tracks for young children. Please share so we can get as many signatures as possible to show there is a need from families living in Hailsham.

How it will be delivered

I will present the idea and petition In person to the town council. On 22nd June Hailsham Town Councils strategic projects committee will meet. This committee is made up of 9 Hailsham Town Councillors. The committees responsibilities includes maintaining and developing Hailshams parks and open spaces.

I have now got involved with Hailsham Active who are looking at the bigger picture of sport and recreation in Hailsham. The town council liked the idea but were nervous about the current recreation and possible issues with so many differnt groups using the space but there are possible alternatives so I will be talking with Steve at Hailsham active to see how we can get something like this in Hailsham sooner. Rather than later :)
