Abandoned motor vehicle on the UK Streets

Petition to the House of Commons: Remove Abandoned Vehicles from Public Roads

To the Honourable Members of the House of Commons:

We, the undersigned residents and concerned citizens, call upon the Government to introduce legislation that addresses the issue of motor vehicles being left stationary on public streets and roadways for extended periods—specifically, vehicles that have not moved for six months or more.

These abandoned vehicles:

  • Take up valuable public parking space
  • Deteriorate over time, creating an eyesore and reducing community pride
  • Pose safety risks to pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users
  • Encourage neglect and urban decay in affected neighborhoods

We respectfully request that Parliament:

  1. Enact a law requiring the removal of any vehicle left unmoved on a public road for more than six months.
  2. Empower local councils or authorities to identify, tag, and tow such vehicles after appropriate notice.
  3. Establish a clear, public reporting process for residents to alert authorities to such vehicles.

We believe this legislation will contribute significantly to safer, cleaner, and more livable communities across the country.

Why is this important?

“Space on public roads is very limited, and leaving a vehicle unmoved on a public road for more than six months is causing problems in communities across the country.”
