Ban Gail's Bakery from Winchester

A petition asking the Council to turn down or revoke planning permission for Gail's Bakery who wish to take over a retail space in Winchester High Street

Why is this important?

Gail’s Bakery has applied for planning permission to turn the former Russell & Bromley shoe shop into a café in Winchester. THAT IS VERY BAD NEWS.

As well as being another chain and losing yet another retail space to a café when we have 50-60 restaurants and cafes in Winchester, Gail’s would like you to believe they are a down-to-earth alternative to major high street chains, BUT Gail’s is majority-owned by Bain Capital, a global private equity firm that are a vocal supporter of Israel.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Bain’s venture capital arm invested over $150 million in Israeli tech and cyber-security companies in 2024 alone. Your £5 latte goes to their pockets!

How it will be delivered

This petition is sponsored by Palestine Solidarity Winchester. Residents have been gathering every Saturday at 12 noon at the Buttercross since May 2025 for a silent peace vigil in solidarity with Palestine. Participants come from diverse religious and non-religious backgrounds and stand together for peace, human rights, compassion, justice and liberation. All who share these values are welcome.
