CARBON NEUTRALITY BY 2050

THIS PETITION IS TO ASK THE UK GOVERNMENT TO PUBLISH REALISTIC QUANTIFIED PLANS FOR ACHIEVING CARBON NEUTRALITY FOR THE UK BY 2050

The Government has targeted the UK to be carbon neutral by 2050. This objective is very important bearing in mind the rapid depletion of the World’s fossil fuel supply and the increasing evidence of man-made climate change.
In 2019, before the turn down resulting from Covid 19, our annual energy consumption was 1,614 Terawatt hours with only 119.5 Terawatt hours delivered from renewables. So at present over 25 years after the first COP conference in 1995 we are less than 7.5% towards this target. In the remaining 28 years to 2050 we need to fill this gap, together with efforts to reduce our overall energy usage.

Plans to meet the carbon neutral target must quantify methods of energy reduction by the main consumers such as transport, industry and domestic, alongside renewable energy production by methods such as nuclear, wind, solar, direct heat, geothermal, tide.

Why is this important?

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT QUANTIFIED PLANS ARE PUBLISHED SO THAT :-
• the British public has confidence that this target can be met

• industry and the general public can use these plans when deciding their future energy needs and sources, so we can all contribute to meeting the target as soon as possible (preferably before 2050).
