Cash not claps

Dear Gillian
For too long the UK government has not appreciated or rewarded the hard work carried out by social care staff. Throughout the pandemic they have stepped up and cared for our most vulnerable members of society in difficult circumstances, often working long hours for little pay in under staffed care homes. There is a national shortage of care and support staff and with a minimum wage rise in April many will find themselves on minimum wage, which will increase the pressure on staffing. Who'd want to do a job with the stress and pressure of trying to provide an adequate quality of care in such trying conditions when ANY other job pays the same?
I am requesting that you urge the chancellor to address this issue with an increase in funding for adult social care to ensure that providers are in a position to provide the staff with an hourly wage of at least £1 above the minimum living wage. I am also requesting that your government legislate so that when future increases in the national living wage are imposed that the social care fees rise at the same amount to ensure the carers and support workers are continually valued.
We clapped for the NHS and carers and surely now it's time to address this huge crisis in social care to ensure providers can recruit and fill their vacancies with the best candidates available and so that our current care and support staff finally feel valued for the amazing job they do.

Why is this important?

There is a staffing crisis in care and support in social care in the UK.
Many carers will find themselves on minimum wage in April due to the rise in the living wage but no rise in social care finances leaving care providers in a position where they will struggle to pay their staff a wage they could get anywhere else doing a job less demanding. We need to act to ensure staff who currently work in care stay and feel valued and others are attracted to a rewarding role supporting and caring for the most vulnerable members of our society
