Essex: Let The People VOTE

This petition is to call on Essex County Council not to vote to stop elections taking place in May 2025.
An extraordinary Full Council meeting on Friday 10 January 2025, councillors will discuss whether Essex should take part in the Government’s devolution priority programme.
An extraordinary Full Council meeting on Friday 10 January 2025, councillors will discuss whether Essex should take part in the Government’s devolution priority programme.
The Government recently notified the council that if Essex wishes to be part of the programme, they must write to them to confirm by 10 January 2025. This would be a joint letter from Essex County Council, Southend-on-Sea City Council and Thurrock Council.
The letter can also request permission to postpone our 2025 local elections.
We don’t want it to say that. We want elections to take place and elect a new council to manage the devolution.

All 75 Essex County Councillors are invited to take part in the debate on 10th January. The Council Leader will make the final decision for Essex County Council following this.
We need to ensure that elections are not cancelled at the request of politicians.
We need to ensure that elections are not cancelled at the request of politicians.
Why is this important?
We have to protect democracy.
Politicians don’t get to pick and choose when they stand for election.
Cancelling elections with such short notice is harmful to democracy.
The Essex County Council elections were due to take place in May 2025 and therefore should take place.
There is no guarantee when the elections would take place should the government proceed with the new arrangements.
There needs to be a democratic mandate from the people.
