Justice to be served

I was in abusive relationship. On November 20th 2020, my intimate partner proceeded to intimidate, defraud and extort me for money. My partner used a number of threats and I was in fear. The person pretended that his water was turned off, despite it not being possible in the UK.

In order to appease my partner, I gave him the money shortly after. I went to the police the following day and was told to block the individual, the police did not take any action. In absence of police support, I returned to my partner. Since then I have attempted to retrieve the money from the individual a number of times, however they will not return it. The case will not be appropriate in a small claims court, as the method for taking the money was largely criminal.

This case shows a massive hole in the police system. Even with concrete evidence of the incident (audio recording) and knowledge that the person was lying about the reason for needing the money (water does not get cut off in this country). The police did not do anything. Leaving victims more vulnerable, feeling unsupported and in a worse place financially.

This petition is to ask the Metropolitan police and Essex police to reopen the case and actually speak to this individual. So I can have a way to get my money back and that there will be some type of punishment for this behaviour.

Why is this important?

This case shows the holes in the police system. Even with evidence of abuse and threats within domestic partners the police often leave victims feeling unsupported and left to tackle the situation themselves.
