Why is this important?
In the 1960's armed security personnel forcibly evicted the islanders against their will, first killing all their pet dogs as a warning. Some stragglers were finally driven out by starvation and lack of medical care in the 1970's.
The USA has maintained a military base there since the 60's. It is alleged they used Diego Garcia, the largest island, for "extraordinary rendition" torture.
2016 the lease is due. These islands are no longer of any use as a military base. Ownership should be with Maritius not Britain. Late 70's or early 80's some islanders were given a pitiful £6,500 compensation, most got nothing.
This injustice should no longer be prolonged by the British Government.
