Make the forced installation of Smart water meters without the customer informed consent unlawful
My area water company has been forcing the installation of Smart water meters without the informed consent of the customers.
The 'Smart' water meter was installed in spite of my refusing its installation. I do not have shared control (with the water company) over the input of meter readings any longer.
Up to the last few months a non-smart water meter that relies on customer inputting readings was present at the property.
I changed my lifestyle dramatically to live sustainably and that has meant I was able to reduce the water I use. I did this by making small changes to how I use water.
For example:
I do not leave the taps running but I collect water I use for most things.
This has meant reducing my water bill.
Your Dept recently made a request (as per info on your website) to water companies to "provide customers" with smart water meters.
"Provide customers" does not imply "Force customers".
Smart water meters do not rely on the regular input of customer that monitor accurate water usage.
Water companies have been also sending ad hoc letters to customers claiming the existence of 'water leaks'.
The "leak" is presumed exclusively from the correlation from Smart water meter OWN readings, generated by the company only and not as a result of accurately inputted customer meter readings.
Water companies then claim upon correlating readings generated by themselves that customers are now responsible for additional payments to for the claimed additional water "leaking" from the smart meter own generated reading, smart meter installation the customer never agreed to and never provided readings for.
The forced installation of smart water meters is being potentially also misused by water companies in order to fleece customers for costs to the missing maintenance of water infrastructure.
As "provide" does not mean "force" I ask that you make the forced installation of smart water meters unlawful and provide water companies with the necessary funding to properly maintain water infrastructure.

Why is this important?

Also in order to prevent future events where having conditioned people to covertly consent into a one way system that takes away from customers control over water usage, it enables water companies to covertly make claims from customers to offset the water company responsibility for maintaining water infrastructure by such as in this case correlating a self generated smart water meter reading to correspond to a water leak.
