Make the streets around Mosshead Primary traffic-free at school times

Proposed traffic-free school zone
Include Mosshead Primary School in the next phase of the Traffic-Free Schools project.

We ask that driving be prohibited at school times on Stockiemuir Avenue east of Roxburgh Drive, and on Cromarty Crescent, Mar Drive and Seafield Avenue. The restriction would apply from 08:30 to 09:15 and 14:30 to 15:15, Monday to Friday in term time, in line with the Council's existing Traffic-Free Schools, with the Council setting the final extent of the zone. Residents of these streets would keep access with a free permit.

Why is this important?

I have one child at Mosshead Primary and another who will be starting soon. Like a lot of families here, we'd love our children to be able to walk, cycle or scoot to school. At the moment, the streets around the school don't feel safe enough for that.

A lot of cars come down Stockiemuir Avenue at school times, and many of them come fast. I've been on my bike, and stood at the gates, and watched cars fly past children on the pavement, overtake abruptly, and park on the zigzag lines outside the school. Others park up in the side streets next to the school. It isn't the kind of driving anyone would expect on roads full of primary school children, and it happens regularly.

East Dunbartonshire Council already has an answer. Its Traffic-Free Schools scheme closes the roads outside a school to traffic for 45 minutes at each end of the school day. The council has made it permanent at four schools and extended it to three more, reporting less traffic and more children walking, cycling and wheeling. Residents keep their access with a free permit.
