Mouse's law

We want the law changed and current legislation that classifies dogs as property amended to re class dogs as companions/family members. We also want dog theft to be made a criminal offence, giving powers to the police to intervene and investigate allegations of dog theft as it's currently deemed civil meaning many people cannot afford the massive legal fees to get their much loved pets home. This causes untold amounts of damage to families and impacts people's mental health.

We want Scottish legislation to fall in line with the recent changes in the pet theft reform act in England.

I recently had my dog stolen by a friend. My dog was abused and I could do nothing. The police could do nothing. This was because my dog was classed as property and it was a civil case so it took almost 2 and half years to get Mouse home, countless court hearings, orders and appeals, all of which I won.

The financial burden of this is small in comparison to the mental torture myself and my family were subjected to. Nobody should ever have to go through this. Please help keep our dogs safe.

If someone stole my car or a friend refused to return it the police would investigate, get my car back and the person would be charged. Why is it 4 wheels, an engine and lump of metal get greater protection from the law than a living breathing animal? The law needs to change - our dogs aren't property. They have personalities and the ability to love and feel things like pain, distress and sadness, yet my car legally has more protection than my dog. This must change, please help us protect our 4 legged family members.

Why is this important?

Because our dogs have very little protection from the law. This needs to change - the law needs to protect our dogs as they are protected in England and as they are protected in most EU countries. They need to be protected in Scotland. Please, please sign our petition and help team Mouse make this change possible and get our dogs the protection they deserve.
