No to Biofuels in Battersea

Dear Wandsworth Council and Battersea Power Station developers,

Please stop plans to BURN BIOFUELS to light, heat and cool the new development at Battersea Power Station.

Why is this important?

Any plans to burn biofuels will damage the climate, destroy rainforest, biodiversity and habitats and pollute local people. It is a false solution to climate change and energy scarcity.

A local campaign, Battersea Against Biofuels, is determined to stop them.

NB If we get a significant number of Wandsworth residents signing the council will take the issue more seriously and above a certain threshold have to debate it in full council.

So if you are a WANDSWORTH RESIDENT please also sign a letter to your councillor. Click on this link which will open in a separate window. Don't forget to sign this petition.

MORE DETAIL
Virtually all biofuels emit more greenhouse gases, when all 'land use change' emissions are taken into account, than the fossil fuels they replace. Further it is the exponential expansion of the use of bio-energy (that this early adopter development is helping drive) that threatens to irreparably damage vital ecosystems, such as rainforests, that help keep the planet in balance. You cannot sustainably source something that is fundamentally unsustainable. Even waste oils are currently being imported from countries which cannot process them who are then importing virgin oil as biofuel!

Biofuel burnt in internal combustion engines will be a significant new pollution source in an already very polluted area. Local Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) emissions already exceed EU limits and the World Health Organisation says there is no safe level for the smaller particulate pollution of which this will be a big new emitter.

Thank you!
