Provide home care workers with free tests to protect the vulnerable

I am writing to ask you to provide social care workers who care for people in their homes with free testing. My friend is Clinically Extremely Vulnerable with a chronic respiratory condition. She's been in strict isolation since March 2020 but caught Covid twice despite being fully vaccinated and not leaving her home. The first time she caught it from her landlord who didn't follow safety procedures and was hospitalised for 7 weeks. She was discharged to care and caught Covid from the carers who were told by the government to test weekly. After 12 weeks, she was diagnosed with Long Covid. She has been in hospital for 3 months with recurrent chest infections as a result of catching Covid and now has significant

lung damage. She found out yesterday that carers will not be given free tests and is now in a situation where she may need to choose between risking catching covid for a third time, which may kill her, and receiving the care that she needs. This is not acceptable.

Why is this important?

People who have care in their homes have a right to feel safe.

My friend's situation came as a shock and it has not been widely reported. The fact is my friend and many other vulnerable and elderly people who have care in their homes simply will not be protected from Covid 19 because home carers won't receive free tests.

In my friend's case, she was told that care workers will stay at home if feeling unwell but with many people unable to afford to do that, the consequences could be disastrous.
