Publish the Peter Mandelson files

We are calling on the Government to publish the Mandelson files in full and without further delay, including all security vetting documents, internal communications, and records relating to decisions taken during his appointment.

Why is this important?

Revelations about the disgraced Lord Peter Mandelson’s relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein have rocked Britain.

Recent reporting has revealed that Mandelson did not receive approval through the UK’s security vetting process prior to taking up his role as ambassador to the United States, and that this recommendation was subsequently overruled by officials. The Prime Minister has said he was not aware of this at the time.

A senior adviser has been forced out following the controversy. But the full picture is still unclear.  And while the Government has agreed to publish more than 100,000 documents about Mandelson’s appointment as Britain’s ambassador to the US, there are concerns about transparency.

The documents — if published in full — would shed light on how this appointment was handled, including the processes followed and the decisions taken.

But there is no clear timeline for publication. ‘Sensitive’ documents will be reviewed and redacted by parliament’s intelligence committee — and reports suggest some material, including information related to the vetting decision, may be considered for withholding or limited disclosure.

Parliament has called for all papers relating to the appointment to be released. Full publication — with only strictly necessary and justified redactions — is essential to ensure proper scrutiny.

Without full access to the documents, it may not be possible for Parliament or the public to fully understand what happened. Publishing the Mandelson files in full would help establish the facts, clarify how decisions were made, and support accountability in public life.
