Red Cross to withdraw from Cancer Car service
In August, 2017 you stopped providing volunteer transport for ad-hoc hospital appointments and assured volunteers that the service would be continued by others, but patients are having to pay extortionate costs for a taxi. You are now partaking in discussions to withdraw from the similar service to convey cancer patients to/from Western General Hospital. This is a crucial service provided by yourselves and MacMillan Cancer Care which you again say will be continued by some other charity(ies) but at what cost to our patients.
Why is this important?
We are currently being told that one in every two of us will be affected by cancer and a great number will have to travel to Edinburgh for treatment each working day for on average 6 to 8 weeks and the present transport service provided by Red Cross Volunteers is crucial as only those on benefits will qualify for grants of financial assistance
