Restore responsible access back to Cannich
Deadline to submit petition to local authority reached
Dear Councillor
For many years local residents have been able to enjoy walking freely along the south bank of the river Cannich from where it crosses the A831, to its confluence with the river Glass. This stretch forms part of a circular walk through riparian woodland where it is possible to see grey heron, kingfisher and otter. Children have been able to play in the river for many years and the natural beauty of the area is a major reason why local people live here and tourists choose to visit. In recent times ownership of this area has changed and in February 2023 the new owner chose to prohibit access, making the area private by means of piling brash onto the path, felling trees to deter walkers and erecting a deer fence with no way to cross. Diplomatic talks have failed and despite support from your access officer, local people are losing the right to enjoy this amazing area. I am writing to you, to ask that the necessary resources are made available to your access department to enable them to escalate this case for the benefit of local residents, their children and the enjoyment of visitors who support local business.

Why is this important?
Many people in Cannich have fond memories of swimming in the river, hopping across the rocks and walking cherished pets that stretch back to their childhood. The current assault on access means that they will stay as memories, with no prospect of handing our heritage on to the next generation, for the benefit of the privileged few. If you feel passionate about defending your right of responsible access, please consider signing this petition.
