RMT should bid for the Southern rail franchise
The union should form a cooperative to run the railway. The first target should be the Southern franchise since the present holders, GTR, have not performed well and are at risk of being de-selected
Why is this important?
The workers united could show what they could achieve when freed from the constraints of feeding shareholders. It would allow those who actually operate the railway to demonstrate that they do know better how to run it. This initiative could provide the template for more cooperative working throughout the economy. The elected government would still be in place to ensure no abuse of monopoly in this instance where there is no market choice for rail users
