Save our Slide: Kelly Ave Park

We the undersigned petition Southwark Council to halt the removal of the long slide at Kelly Avenue Park, as there have been no notices, public information, engagement or consultation.

Why is this important?

This park was constructed as part of the regeneration of the North Peckham Estate to honour the memory of Damilola Taylor and as a mark of respect to the community. Since its installation, over 10 years ago, there has been zero maintenance, with removal of at least 8 items when they needed repair.

Regeneration has been replaced with degradation. Repair the roof covering/walkway using capital funds, and replace removed playground assets:
roundabouts, spinners, spring rockers, table tennis table, A frame.

IMPORTANT INFO FOR SOUTHWARK RESIDENTS:
THIS PETITION IS PRIMARILY FOR CHILDREN TO HAVE THEIR VOICES HEARD, AS THE COUNCIL PETITION CANNOT BE SIGNED WITHOUT A MYSOUTHWARK ACCOUNT.

The reason given by the council for removing the long slide is, 'the increased footfall' caused by children accessing the slide! The slide itself is structurally sound. Yes, the slide is popular. It is loved by both children, adults and their families.  Being constructed after the terrible local tragedy of Damilola's death, it is a massive insult to the local community to literally strip every asset needing any attention at all.

The whole park has been utterly neglected for the entirety of its existence, a period of approximately 16 years. The basket ball hoops on Kelly Ave Park courts are also bent and battered and have had zero attention since installed. It is a further slap in the face that similar local family parks in affluent parts of Southwark are extremely well maintained, with fully refurbished basket ball courts etc.
