Scrap standing charges for prepay gas and electric meters

For many years now, people in debt with electric or gas bills have been forced to go onto pre payment meters. These meters charge a daily standing charge even if no energy is used. This means that the poorest in society are paying more for their gas and electricity than everyone else. This is unfair and causing so much hardship and suffering to people. Some people are now unable to afford to cook cheaper healthy meals as they can't afford to switch on their cookers. They are regularly going without hearing or lighting as unlike water supplies, electric and gas prepayment meters will disconnect the supply if the customer cannot put enough money on the meter. Despite people being on the severely disabled and reliant on medical equipment powered by electricity, the supply will go off and leave families in cold and darkness.

Why is this important?

It is important that we look after disabled and elderly people as well as young children. They cannot find money to pay these charges. Why should the poorest pay the most for the same service?
