Say 'NO' to the Nursing Associate Band 4 role
Please do not agree to the introduction of the Band 4 Nursing Associate Post. It will fragment patient care, reduce care to tasks, not provide personalised patient care and result in costly poor clinical outcomes, patient harm and additional pressure on an already stretched registered nurse/midwife, doctor and AHP workforce.
Why is this important?
We have a severe shortage of registered nurses and midwives not a shortage of unregistered health care assistants. National and international research evidence shows that every 10% increase employing a nurse with a degree results in 10% decrease in odds of mortality. Too many unregistered nurses results in them spending up to 26% 'idle time' as they can only 'act down' whereas a registered nurse can take a patient to the toilet and can also resuscitate them if they collapsed. Many people want to train as a registered nurse/midwife but there are insufficient University bursary places funded, which has resulted in 50% of all trusts in England working with unsafe nurse staffing levels. Registered Nurses/midwives are suffering from burnout and care is being missed, which is causing harm to patients. We do not want another Mid Staffordshire debacle.
