To: Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transport.

Stop the Meole Brace roundabout works in Shrewsbury, beginning on 31st October!

Please stop the roundabout works at Meole Brace, Shrewsbury!

Why is this important?

We would like Shropshire County Council to reconsider the works that the roundabout is about to undergo on the 31st October 2016.

The roundabout is an important area for nature and wildlife with many trees and no consideration has been taken in regard to this. There appear to be no plans involving the relocation of animals and birds. This is also a very tricky time of year as many animals are preparing to hibernate for the winter.

At the very least we request that plans be put in place to relocate the wildlife carefully and considerately in advance of this project.

The works will also result in turning an attractive and well established area of greenery, trees and wildlife in to something ugly and unnecessary.

The Meole Brace roundabout rarely suffers from traffic build up or delays and so the need for, and purpose of, these so called 'improvements' is very hard to fathom and a huge waste of public money!

Very few members of the local community feel that they have been consulted on or made aware of these changes in advance, and many were unaware at all before the signs went up a few days ago. This has caused great dismay among local residents and concern about the impact of such changes. We request that you hold a public meeting to discuss reasons for these works and allow local community members to voice their concerns, before going ahead.

We request that you reconsider this unnecessary and expensive venture, which will serve to destroy an attractive and well established nature area, in a place which already has enough through roads to serve the local community.

Hi Everyone..

Sorry for the silence. We are trying to work out our next move!
Yesterday the Contractors dug right through the middle of the roundabout uprooting trees and no doubt damaging wildlife. This is despite a promise in their press release on Friday that..
'The work to be carried out in the coming months is only to move some of the utilities, and will not see any changes to the trees nor any of the areas the petition objects to'.

We are really angry that not only has the Council chosen to ignore the will of the people but they have been prepared to lie to us too!
The Shropshire Star are on their way there now to photograph the damage.

We are doing a lot of work looking at the safety and legality of all issues and we will keep you posted.
Given the blatant disregard for the people of Shrewsbury another protest is on the cards so keep checking in here!

Thank you, thank you, to everyone who turned up in the cold and the fog today to demonstrate against the `Meole Brace roundabout works!
And thank you to all those who would have liked to be there but work prevented them but were supporting us in spirit and by all the tooting horns we received... Hundreds of you made us feel supported by beeping and calling out and we truly appreciate it.

This is far from over... the utility works have begun but the main part of the works begins in Jan.. So we have time and we have people... 4,000 of you! So keep checking here for updates as we will keep you informed. And keep sending the petition on as it is staying open.
The next demo will likely be held at a time that suits more people so we would love to see even more of you next time. They will always be peaceful affairs.
Thank you to Friends of the Earth, The green party, and Cuan wildlife Centre for their support today.

HI Everyone...
I realise 8am is a bit of a struggle for some. Main thing is we are there before works due to start so we can make our point. If you can't make it until 8.30/8.45 that's fine. Just come when you can.. We wont be rushing away! Be careful crossing the roads!
See you tomorrow.

Dear all,
We request you join us to peacefully demonstrate at Meole roundabout on Monday!
We received a very late response from the council today which can be read here;
http://shropshire.gov.uk/news/2016/10/meole-brace-roundabout-work-essential-to-the-infrastructure-of-shrewsbury/
We feel the response is inadequate, hence we have decided to take a stance, in person.
We are planning to protest on Monday the 31st October on the Meole Brace roundabout at 8am. It will be a peaceful demo called 'Hands around Meole Island'.
For anyone who is free it would be amazing to have your support. Even if you can only come for half an hour, or part of the morning, your presence will be welcome and appreciated.
You may bring any banners that you wish, anything that sends the message will be great!

If you can come, please email [email protected]
so we can get an idea of numbers.
Many thanks,
Your campaign team. x

The Habitat survey that Simon Jones promised to release earlier this week, which was undertaken in advance of the works is now available here...

Please note that it was funded and undertaken by 'Mouchel' the contractors for the SITP - Sheds a different light on things!
