Team Daniel: The fight for school counsellors

We’re calling for every school to have a counsellor after Daniel, who took his own life at the age of 15 because he became so stressed revising for his GCSEs.

Why is this important?

It comes amid growing concerns that some children and young people are being forced to wait up to 18 months for vital support, and due to the pandemic this is sometimes longer.

No child or young adult should have to wait 18 months for vital support and guidance. Many young people might not have needed formal social care support if they had received the early help they needed.

In 2017 228 children died by suicide the youngest one being 8 years old due to bullying

Mental health issues affect one in six children, they include depression, anxiety and conduct disorder (a type of behavioural problem)

Every school in the country should have a counsellor, in whom children and young people can have trust and confidence to share their feelings and issues.

This change is so important to prevent and recue the needless suffering of millions of children, and the senseless death of so many, at such young ages.

providing counsellors will not only stop school age deaths, but the results should feed through into a reduction in suicide and harm in adolescents and young adults.
