To secure a piece of land for the community

For some years now Ancoats ward of Manchester is going through various developments under the aegis of Home & Communities Agency (HCA) and Manchester City Council (MCC), and yet we, the residents, had little say in the developments of the area. Since HCA took over from NWDA, it is difficult to ascertain or speak to anybody who is responsible for our area. MCC only comes to play when the development is in the planning stage, which is too late to stop any development; only to be tinkered with around the edges.

Our Group’s aim is to consolidate the fragmented groups of Ancoats business and residents into one group and to join our voice in protesting any underhand activities and developments which are not conducive to pleasant living and working in the area. The position of Ancoats is dire because the authority is determined on making it an all concreted area without any earthy green aspects. We have only one open tree-lined small site in the Ancoats Urban Village which is ear-marked by the HAC to build houses. Our aim is to acquire that land for converting it into a community garden. The buildings and houses in the area have no private gardens, though 5-7 storey buildings are going up all the time. Our efforts, if successful, will give the local kids an open space within shouting distance from their homes and the residents and office workers to enjoy themselves alfresco away from the concreted Ancoats. Local communities will take on the responsibility of running and administering their gardens funded by their own resources. Who knows, it may catch up all over Manchester and beyond.

Two days ago (June, 2014) we, the residents, were surprised to receive invitation to attend an open session for us to give our comments on the MCC’s Development Framework on further developments in the area: the venue, date and time of the open session is as follows:-

Thursday 3rd July, 2.30 pm – 7.00 pm at St. Michael’s Church, George Leigh Street, Ancoats.
Thursday 17th July, 2.30 pm – 7 pm at Vivid Lounge, 151 Great Ancoats Street.

I hope those who are interested will visit the venue to help us and will add their comments preferring to secure the plot bounded by George Leigh Street & Blossom Street and Sherrat St & Bengal St, Ancoats, to secure the land for the community.

Those who cannot attend the “open” session perhaps would care to send me their e-mail address to [email protected] to arrange for online comments.

Please join us providing names, addresses, telephone number and contact e-mail address.
