Toothpaste and The Great Society

Back in 1966, on 22nd May, President Lyndon B Johnson launched his Great Society campaign; a bid to eradicate poverty in the USA and to expand and enforce civil rights in America. 53 years later, they seem to be doing just the opposite. But at least the toothpaste tube was invented in 1892 so we can all go to hell in a handcart with minty fresh breath.

We meet on Euro election eve, so no doubt the great shadow of Brexit will be on the agenda although my personal feeling is a combination of angst, bewilderment and powerlessness. Still, at least we get to understand what Waiting for Godot is all about.

The great NHS bargain basement sell-off continues unabated in the background and the parlous state of council funding and the dire consequences for the most vulnerable people merit our attention far more the efficacy of the D'Hondt system. It will be a salutary occasion to discuss something local.
