Adapt Texture Talks into a TV Show

I want to take Texture Talks to TV, to allow the different stories, challenges and experiences of all of our varied cultural communities to be taken seriously and discussed as an ONGOING conversation piece, as opposed to just a one off.

Why is this important?

As a culture, the needs, challenges and lived experiences of people of colour are rarely spoken to CONSISTENTLY by media outlets.

When we are addressed in the media, this tends to fall into formats such as one time documentaries, limited series', or one time specials, which, however powerful and meaningful those pieces of content are, are naturally only promoted for a particular length of time before they are pushed aside for other topics that can shock and excite a wider population of viewers.

Since I started reaching out to commissioners I’ve been told this project is for too niche an audience, not aligned with their genres of interest, or simply just deleted off their database without review as they do not accept unsolicited material with the comforting message that I shouldn’t worry as they are “actively developing a number of projects, some of which may be similar to the material I am developing.”

Clearly I’m going to need some help here.

I’m not going to be taken seriously without your support.

Being able to have this kind of discourse that is normally relegated to our private group chats, living rooms and family events, regularly, on a world stage, so they are no longer simply a ticked box for diversity but a serious ongoing conversation piece, will highlight the awareness of so many important cultural concepts that many are either unaware of, had never considered or are currently unwilling to open their minds to due to their current lack of visibility, and has the potential to help breed the kind of candid, empathetic and educational dialogue that could unite us all in a period of our generation where so many of us have never felt so disconnected.

Considering the many reality TV shows that are far surpassing 10, 12 and sometimes 20+ seasons right now, the question is, are the millions of stories and realities we have to share not of value too?

From the curls on our head that challenge our perceptions of beauty, cause constant strife with our battles with self love, and strike up conversations of discrimination, colonialism, and culture every time we open our mouths to discuss them, to the colour of our skin, sparking debates around the heritages we hold dear, the generational rituals we are still unpacking and the impacts of western culture and colonialism that we are still comprehending, the talking points and diverse range of voices and perceptions in what is far from a niche population of people, are both thought provoking, and significant to uplift for the benefit of those inside and outside of these cultural groups.

Texture Talks is a community project, that aims to achieve all this and more, and my hope is with your support, we can take this safe but challenging space and get it on TV on a regular slot, so others can finally stop making light of the needs of millions of people, promoting their plights only when it suits those controlling the narrative of what we watch at the top, to help strengthen the inclusivity glamour muscles of those who need us as success metrics for their own personal, commercial or political gain.

With a project like this, the wider world outside of the numerous communities Texture Talks speaks to can hopefully finally understand the reality of our lives on a deeper level than they've ever understood, whilst being able to also be held accountable for the part many of them play in our experience.
